Het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, het Leids Instituut voor Chemie van de Universiteit Leiden en het Pivot Park Screening Centre besloten hun krachten te bundelen om gezamenlijk de strijd tegen kanker aan te gaan. In 2014 hebben zij het Cancer Drug Discovery Initiative opgericht, waarin zij hun kennis en infrastructuur zullen delen om nieuwe geneesmiddelen tegen kanker te ontdekken.
In een multidisciplinaire onderzoekslijn, waarin we organische en medicinale chemie combineren met chemische biologie en moleculaire farmacologie, richten we ons op het ontwerpen, synthetiseren en profileren van kleine moleculen die als leads kunnen dienen om de activiteit van eiwitten in tumoren te controleren. We maken gebruik van computationele chemie en proteomics om onze moleculen te optimaliseren.
Our common goal is simple and easily described, but the roads we take and focus points we have in our science are very diverse. It is our mission to unravel the molecular details of the working of cells in their normal function and the perturbed functioning in diseased cells and to help translate our knowledge and technologies to clinical practice. The molecular levels our research focusses on varies from chemically manipulating and understanding biological processes on a cell biology level all the way up to intervening in diseased tissues. The techniques we use for this also spans a broad spectrum from classical biochemistry towards state-of-the-art electron microscopy. Ranging from virus biology to genome editing, diabetes and oncogenic signaling, our scope of interest covers a wide area of the life sciences.
